May Day 125th ANNIVERSARY HAYMARKET MEMORIAL May Day - Honored by Workers Worldwide
President Dean Apple and IBEW Local 15 Representatives joined approximately one thousand others at Waldheim Cemetery in west suburban Forest Park to rededicate the Haymarket Martyrs Memorial on May 1, 2011. Mayor Anthony Calderone welcomed the attendees who included Jorge Ramirez, Chicago Federation of Labor President, Mike Carrigan, Illinois AFL-CIO President, Thomas Kilbride, Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice and Liz Shuler, Secretary-Treasurer AFL-CIO.
With labor support, Justice Kilbride was retained in the last election after the pro-business group Illinois Civil Justice League pledged to raise more than $1 million to defeat him. Liz Shuler is a member of IBEW Local 125 in Oregon and worked at the IBEW International office before being elected AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer. She is the first woman to hold that position and the daughter of an IBEW lineman who worked at PGE.
The memorial marks the resting place of the seven labor activists who were convicted in an 1886 sham trial in Chicago.
Labor activists had attended rally May 4, 1886 at Haymarket Square near Randolph and Des Plaines to protest the May 1st killing of a worker during a strike for an eight-hour workday at McCormick Reaper Works, near Blue Island and Western.
Mayor Carter Harrison had attended and deemed the meeting peacable. After Carters departure as the meeting ended, Police Inspector John Black Jack Bonfield sent police in to disperse the crowd. An unknown person threw a bomb that killed policeman Mathias Degan. Police shot into the crowd and killed four protesters. Six policemen were killed, most by the wild shooting of other officers.
The police rounded up well known labor activists during city-wide manhunts intent on revenge. George Engel, Samuel Fielden, Adolph Fischer, Louis Lingg, Oscar Neebe, Albert Parsons, Michael Schwab, and August Spies were selected as the scapegoats for a bogus trial with a packed jury and a hostile judge. Everyone but Neebe was sentenced to death by hanging.
Engel, Fischer, Parsons, and Spies, were hanged on November 11, 1887. Governor Oglesby commuted the sentences of Fielden and Schwab the day before. Lingg cheated the gallows by biting down on a blasting cap that had been smuggled into his cell. The five men were buried in a plot now marked by the memorial.
Governor Altgeld pardoned Fielden, Neebe, and Schwab in 1893, the same year the monument statue was erected. Schwab and Neebe requested to also be buried in the plot. August Spies last words just before the door dropped and he was hanged are etched into the base of the monument -
The day will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you are throttling today".
